Today we had our egg drop, and our egg survived! Our design ended up being an Easter egg, inside of it was bubble wrap and paper shreds, protecting the egg. When the capsule hit the ground, it opened up and the egg fell out, but it ended up surviving. This may have been mostly due to a soft, muddy ground, preventing the possibility of it cracking. To prevent the Easter egg from splitting open and possibly cracking, we intend to put duct tape around the opening of the egg. Also, bubble wrap will be surrounding the outside of the Easter egg in the final launch, because this will give the egg enough volume to fit in the 2.75" body tube as well as provide extra cushioning. Our original intent was to wrap the egg in bubble wrap, but we had to scrap this idea due to having no way to attach the wrapping to the outside of the Easter egg. A main problem with surrounding the outside will be how we will get the real chicken egg inside the capsule after it is closed. We will counter this by placing a small incision where the egg opens up, effectively allowing us to access the inside but also preventing the egg form falling out.
We also 3D printed a nose cone for our final rocket. It weighs about 12 grams, and at $10,000 per gram of ABS plastic, the "price" of the nosecone comes out to about $120,000.
